poultry preventative vaccines

Happy Hens Hatchery suggests... that all chicks purchased, be vaccinated against Marek's disease and Coccidiosis. Marek's vaccine is a preventative against Marek's disease an important procedure given to newly hatched chicks before they leave the hatchery. Please note if not vaccinated, the chicks are in no way protected against the disease. Medicated feed will not protect chicks against Marek's disease. Vaccination is the only protection against Marek's disease. Coccidiosis vaccine is a natural product, that can be used as an alternative for medicated feed in raising meat birds, turkeys & layer. (Organic Growers)
Both vaccines will protect the life of the bird.

Breed Information . . .

This should be a busy year at the farm with our feathered friends; and the introduction of our new breeds for Spring/ Fall 2002.

Happy Hens is dedicated to the genetic preservation of rare heritage breeds and creating awareness to the world of raising these especially rare and beautiful birds. Breeds that are not routinely available are limited in numbers and very unique to most individuals. In todays society, most breeds are commercial strains bred only for egg production. We would like to offer folks "poultry of distinction," not only your common commercial "brown hen" but birds with heritage, character, and beautiful appearance. Happy Hens welcomes folks to please share any information they may have regarding heritage breeds. We are always looking for rare breeds to promote in Canada and spread around the country, to establish new flocks for everyone to enjoy. If you have any rare purebreds drop us a line, we'd love to hear from you…

We hope you will enjoy our poultry selections and packages designed to introduce the poultry hobbyist to many varieties of poultry and waterfowl. We try to offer you these packages at special prices. The reason for 25 chicks required, is for shipping purposes… the safety factor and that without these numbers the chicks would not have the warmth they require. We hope you will be able to try various varieties and find your feathery favorites.

Most people today are looking to simplify their lives … getting back to the good old basics …enjoying gardening, farming, raising live-stock, and their own home-grown eggs, chicken and vegetables. What a nice lifestyle! To be self-sufficient and in charge of the food you eat. Whether you want enough fresh eggs and poultry for the family table, or as a hobby showing your birds at poultry clubs, the choice is yours. There is nothing more rewarding than to sit back and gaze at a flock of beautiful colorful Ameraucana’s chickens, a group of snow white graceful Sebastopol geese or a lively cute little bunch of Bantams as they forage & frolic in the back-yard. So whether you live in the country or on acreage, & you want one chicken or one hundred, we at Happy Hens are here to help.

Hatchery Information

Happy Hens Hatchery - maintains and houses it's own breeding flocks. This keeps us in-tune with our birds, their behavior, temperaments, personalities and traits. What these varieties are like to work with on a daily basis, with this; we are able to share the information about the various breeds with you.

Due to health regulations and the protection of our flocks, we are unfortunately not able to give tours of our facilities. Happy Hens Hatchery has it's own Veterinarian and follows all the required measures to maintain a healthy, breeding flock with regular medication and vitamin programs to ensure good health of its breeding flocks and young chicks. Happy Hens Hatchery and the staff are unfortunately not in the position to discuss personal questions on poultry related issues regarding diseases nor are we qualified or in the position to diagnose or prescribe medications for your back-yard poultry. There are many individual factors that involve poultry health, for information on poultry health, medications, diseases, vitamins, worming please consult your veterinarian or purchase literature on these subjects. We will be happy to supply you with a list of good reference material regarding poultry, chicken care, health and feeding; with the publications available for purchase at the farm. For basic information regarding poultry, chick and duck care, please visit our "frequently asked" questions section on the Happy Hens website. Also enclosed in your poultry order is a poultry, chick and duckling facts sheet.

A Message from the Farm

We hope you enjoy our efforts to produce a catalogue with live poultry shots instead of the normal prints & drawings used in most poultry catalogues. The prints are lovely, but not as realistic as the real birds.
I must admit, it would have been much more simple and less expensive. Trying to keep poultry still for hours is not an easy feat. There are other birds available, that have not been photographed. Beautifully framed poultry prints are available for purchase from the farm.

A Note on Show Birds...

Our chicks, ducklings & goslings are sold at regular poultry prices. We do not charge more for exhibition birds, nor do we classify them as such. All of our birds have been bred to conform to breed standards set out by the American Poultry Association and also for individual purposes such as egg layers or meat depending on the breed. Most of our breeds can be exhibited, but we unfortunately can not guarantee show winners. Please keep in mind even with the best stock you can have imperfections. It is best to order 3-6 babies of a certain breed, if showing is a possibility.

Safe Arrival reports

We are really enjoying the chicks. Our three children absolutely love them. They seem quite lively and happy, and are eating well (the chicks - actually the children too!!) We are going to order some laying chicks later in the spring. Thank you. D. Durrer - Kelowna BC

Wow! What a wonderful lot of chicks & turkeys! The best I’ve ever received. Keep up the great work, I shall order again. Thanks so very much. They are all alive & well. H. Jameson - Nelson BC

When I went to the post office to pick up my chicks, I was told mine were the most lively box they’ve had in all day. It has been a lot of fun seeing all the different types of chicks in my order and guessing what they might look like later. Thank you for the lovely extras! S. Pepper - McBride BC

We liked the instructions - 100% survival rate - thanks for the N/C Bantams - Easy pickup at the local post office. H. Zonruiter - Lone Butte BC
